Compared to other Learning Library books (Inside your Outside, Oh Say Can you Seed) this more resembled the Cat in the Hat reading books (Green Eggs and Ham, There's a Wocket in my Pocket) in my opinion. My kids enjoyed having it read to them, but weren't as enamored by the "education" as with the previous Learning Library books I mentioned. To me it didn't seem very educational.

I love the Cat In The Hat books & so does my daughter. This is a great way to make reading fun! I have bought several of these books from Amazon and will surely order more. I would highly recrecommend these books as a wonderful gift for a child of any age.

Cute, educational, and sends the right message! Paired with the book about our bodies and how they work it is a perfect lesson that is very entertaining!

The opening vignettes are really good as well, and help set the tone for the chapter. My favorite part about this textbook was the "Main Messages" section at the end of the chapters. The summary it provided was great and it proved to be a helpful study tool.The Pros:-easy to read-very informative-excellent, up-to-date statistics-summary section at the end of each chapterThe Cons:-the online resource wasn't available when I took the class. I used the previous edition's online quizzes to study, but it certainly would have been ideal if the current online resource was available.

Actually I have just started reading but I want to know why I can't read this book on my Kindle or the Cloud reader. My only option is my phone. If I had known of the restriction I would not have purchased the book. Or am I just missing something?

I bought this book for my global health class. I think I got a good deal on it compared to the book store. My only complaint is this book is very fragile. So when purchasing this book be very careful with it. The pages tear very easily.

Our tour was formatted around our interests, and we found it thoroughly engaging. One of the nicest parts of the tour was Krysti kept us out of the crowded areas using back streets and areas unknown to "tourists", which we would have never seen if we did not book a personnel tour.Krysti was easy to contact and reached out for comformation of date and time prior to our trip.We learned so much about this beautiful city and look forward to returning on day for another tour by Krysti.

I grew up in Italy and have always been curious about the people and places that were hidden behind the Iron Curtain. Excited for my first trip to Prague, I read this book. I was at once intimidated into thinking I'd never find my way around and no one would speak English! I was wrong on both counts! The metro and tram systems are just as easy to use and decipher as those in any other European capital - and, I have yet to find anyone who doesn't speak English!The Czech people are delightful, friendly, and helpful. Don't let this book frighten you into believing you can't visit Prague on your own! You can!I'm also surprised by some of the omissions in this book, such as the Mucha Museum. Granted, no guide can include everything, but he is still loved throughout the world and many of his designs adorn buildings throughout the city.If you are a confident independent traveler, this is not the book for you. Instead, I recommend Duncan J.D. Smith's "Only in Prague." There is so much to love about this city!

This book is the perfect travel companion for Prague. Not too long, not too short, and full of excellent suggestions for highlights, restaurants. shopping and walking tours. I loved the insider tips. In addition we were able to meet the author as she is available as a personal guide in Prague, and we spent a wonderful day learning how to really enjoy the city. We spent four wonderful days there in April of 2017 and I'm very happy we bought this book and met Krysti.

This is great little book to bring along on your trip to Prague, especially if you are visiting the city on your own. The author clearly states what the guide is and is not. We believe it is a concise, easy to follow, well written guide which will help make your trip to Prague a good experience no matter what your interests. We were in Prague early December and lucky to be able to have spent 6 hours with Krysti. She is an excellent tour guide and it was easy to see why her book is so informative.Raised in the US (Macon GA), she was once one of us - from a tourists perspective. Now after spending the better part of the last 20 years in Prague she is able to offer a type of information and advice that is most helpful. We highly recommend this book for the first time visitor.... You have spent all that money to get to Prague, why not spend $9 more dollars to help ensure a great visit!

Not only did I purchase and use this insightful book to help guide me and my small group through this exquisite City, but I very wisely retained the "tour guide and concierge" services of the author herself. Krysti has lived in Prague since 1992 (with a quick stopover in DC for a few years), and her knowledge, enthusiasm, and ability to communicate both made our several days in Prague so fulfilling. The book itself helps separate the must-see wheat from the touristy chaff, as it were, and allows one to hone in on the "must dos" and "favorite spots". We certainly took advantage of her recommendations, whether it be pistachio gelato at Angelatos, coffee/lunch at Café Savoy or fine dining at Kampo Park. In fact, we enjoyed our full day tour with Krysti so much, that she graciously accepted our invitation to join us for dinner at Kampo Park. Traveling with a guide....whether it be a smart user friendly tour book or the services of the author herself, we could not more strongly recommend teaming up with Krysti next time you are in Prague.

Prague Travel Tips: is the 'Cliff Notes' on traveling in Prague, while feeling your holding hands with the guide. Actually, after reading and highlighting this book, my family and I did hire the author, Krysti Brice, to help us see the sites of her 'adopted city'. She lays the foundation of her knowledge of art history and architecture in the book but it merely touches on the breadth of her expertise. The ease with which one can read the book is also replicated in the comfort you feel when you are walking the city with her. For the confident and experienced independant traveler, this book will further enhance the nuances of the city for you, as well as remind you of the basics. It contains the 'must see' sites but the hidden treasures as well. I found the dining recommendations to be particularly useful and accurate. The book is somewhat of a tease as it never provides quite enough information, but isn't that what entices us to see for ourselves? That is the experience of being there, not just reading about it. However, I would like to see this author tackle the arguably more difficult challenge of armchair travel writing so that she can share her stories with the reader as we did with her over coffee and dessert (vetrnik) at the Cafe Savoy. After reading the 'tips' and touring with her, I can understand why Prague is now her adopted city.

Stiff: The Curious Life of Human Cadavers is an example of a morbid topic turned into a page turning and ironically uplifting read. Having read Mary Roach’s newest book, Grunt, in which she talks about the science of keeping soldiers alive, I decided to read her first one, Stiff, for two reasons. One was to see how much she’d changed as an author, but two – and the bigger reason – was a fascination with the subject. Stiff‘s subtitle is The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, and the book is about exactly that: what happens to our remains after we die? Like she did with Grunt (and, I’m presuming, all of her books), Roach divides the book into independent chapters, each focusing on different aspects. There’s the bodies that end up in mortuary schools, as well as those that end up dissected by medical students. There are cadavers used as crash testers, those that end up at the Body Farm (where decay is studied, among other things), those that are used to help understand airplane crashes…and those that were used to understand what happened to Jesus and others who were crucified. And there’s much more to be found here, including bodies as compost, as art, and more.It’s a fascinating subject, and one that put Roach on the map – and having read the book, it’s not hard to see why. Done wrongly, the book could seem insensitive, ghoulish, or just depressing. But Roach celebrates these cadavers, reminding the reader just how much has been gained from this research and just how important these bodies have been to not only medicine, but to our society as a whole. At the same time, she never shies away from the discomfort people feel; indeed, one of the most compelling threads in each chapter is discussing with the various people she meets how they manage to maintain a proper emotional balance when they’re working with the dead all the time.Roach is more of a presence in Stiff than she is in Grunt; it feels like more of a first book, and something she might grow away from as she went. But that also feels like a key part of why the book works; after all, death is a fundamentally personal event, and there’s little way to read Stiff and not spend time thinking about what you would want done with your own remains, be it cremation, burial, donation, or more. And Roach builds her own debate into the book, concluding the book with a chapter that finds her pondering what to do with her own remains, having done all these studies and researches into our possible fates.But lest that sound too heavy, Stiff is every bit as engaging and fun as you would hope from Roach’s reputation. Her digressive footnotes and odd asides are still evident, her willingness to ask questions no less charming, and her ability to bring a light tone to even heavy subject matters no less welcome. More than that, she finds depth and thoughtfulness to discuss beyond what you would expect, to the point where you get the impression that she could write a whole second book about bodies and never run out of things to say. That she does all this while being incredibly informative, demonstrating a gift for conveying complex things quickly, and managing to even tell stories, is just testament to her skills as a writer, and the deservedness of her reputation.

If you get nauseous easy this may not be the book for you. This may also not be the book for you if you are an animal lover. There are several sections that discuss experiments on animals – the same or similar experiments that are being done on cadavers – that was very difficult for me to read.

The moon goddess, White Wave, appears in the form of a moon snail to keep house for a poor farmer. When he discovers her in human form, she ascends to heaven in awesome glory, but promises to return in his hour of need. Wolkstein has added an author's note to this version, made some editorial changes, and given the farmer a name. Young's black-and-white pencil drawings, repeating the spiraling moon snail motif while poignantly evoking the farmer's loss and White Wave's majesty, come to the new edition unchanged. They are now printed on matte paper with red borders and subtle illuminations of silver and look slightly more dramatic than they did in the earlier edition. Libraries with a clean copy of the older version may not need this new one. Wolkstein (Esther's Story, 1996, etc.) revisits an exquisite Chinese folktale she first published in 1979. The poor, solitary farmer of the original tale now has a name: Kuo Ming. He finds an opalescent shell and takes it home. The next evening, his dinner is waiting for him when he returns from the fields. He wonders how this happens, and, by spying, he discovers a woman of light, the moon goddess, who lives in the shell; he knows he must not touch her. In the way of such things, he cannot resist doing so, and thus loses her, but she leaves him her name, White Wave, and a promise that she keeps. He builds a shrine to her and tells his children the tale. When he dies, the shell is lost; the shrine, in time, disappears. ``All that remained was the story.'' The changes in the text may be too subtle to justify purchasing this newly designed edition where the old one is still available; Young's spare black-and-white pencil illustrations, with their gorgeous use of negative space, are unchanged.
